What is the ISE Program?

The Individual Skills Enhancement Program provides funding for you to upgrade your skills, education, and/or take training in order to help you get the job you want! Participants must complete an application process and eligibility screening.

How Can ISE Help?

The Individual Skills Enhancement program will:
  • Pay for training related costs including tuition, books, and mandatory student fees for a course no longer than 12 weeks
  • Assist with additional costs which can include parking, transit passes, and dependant care.
  • Arrange a work placement for up to 14 weeks in a position related to the training received.

ISE Eligibility

Young people are eligible if they are:

  • Between 15 and 30 years old
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada and Ontario
  • Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or granted refugee status in Canada
  • NOT in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits,
    and
    In need of assistance to overcome employment barriers

Training and work placement

Training Eligibility

  • No other funding support is available
  • The course duration is a maximum of 12 weeks
  • The course is provided by an institution recognized by the Government of Ontario
  • The course is a necessary and logical step within the young person’s employment action plan.

Types of Training

  • General employment readiness
  • Literacy and numeracy enhancement (as could be addressed within a 12 week period)
  • Distance education
  • Structured General Equivalency Diploma (GED) preparation and upgrading
  • Pre-employment courses
  • Occupation-specific courses
  • Pre-apprenticeship course

Work Placement

After training, you will :

  • Participate in a work placement up to 14 weeks in length
  • Participate in a work placement that is relevant to the training you have received

How to Get Started

Contact your Case Worker or Employment Counsellor if you meet the general eligibility criteria. A Training and Skills Assessment will help you reach your goals.
