The Workforce Planning Board's 2018 EmployerOne Construction Industry Insights show that 74% of construction employers had difficulty hiring in the past 12 months. The top reason given for this difficulty was "Not Enough Applicants". This is an indication of the workforce shortage in the construction sector.
Organizations like the Aboriginal Apprenticeship Board of Ontario (AABO) believe hiring indigenous youth for these construction jobs could be the solution to this problem. The AABO is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of Aboriginal people in the trades in Ontario.
The AABO is the embodiment of the Ontario-based Aboriginal Apprenticeship Strategy as defined in the document “Supply Meeting Demand.” Its purpose is to ensure that the components of the Strategy are well articulated through a plan of action, which will have measurable and positive results throughout the province for both the workers and employers.
Help from organizations like this one, along with an increasing workforce shortage in construction, make this a great time for indigenous youth to Join the Construction Movement.
