According to the 2018 EmployerOne Survey, 79% of manufacturing related businesses are expecting to hire over the next 12 months and the area will have to deliver a workforce that is willing to take on these roles. However, many people still believe that all manufacturing is dark, dirty, dangerous and that jobs are poorly paid.
In order to overcome the misconceptions surrounding the manufacturing industry, the Workforce Planning Board is inviting the public to come and see what it’s really like inside local manufacturing facilities and what kinds of jobs are available as part of Manufacturing Day 2018.
“Manufacturing Day allows us to address the misconceptions surrounding manufacturing and shows the public what the industry is really all about” said Nicole Stefan from Ontario Drive and Gear. Ontario Drive and Gear has previously hosted public tours for Manufacturing Day and will take part again this year.
As well as organizing public tours, the Workforce Planning Board partners with school boards and other organizations to coordinate tours for students and newcomers across Waterloo, Wellington and Dufferin. In total, this year there will be more than 20 partner busses out on Manufacturing Day with most touring a facility in the morning and another in the afternoon. One former student, Sawsha Seeley, participated in a Manufacturing Day tour while in high school and is now an electrician apprentice with a major manufacturer in the area.
“Manufacturing Day gave me a chance to see what these people actually do on a day to day basis rather than just hearing from people talking about it.” Sawsha says it reinforced her thoughts of entering this industry.
Carol Simpson from the Workforce Planning Board said “We had people on public busses last year who had not previously considered the industry as an employment option however several were actually offered and accepted positions after being on the tours. We consider that a win for everyone.”
Manufacturing Day is taking place on Friday, October 5th and registration for public tours is now available. Click here for details.
