Think back to when you were first getting your driver’s licence and heading off on your road test. Were you nervous? Now add on a tractor-trailer. It is not an easy test!
In response to a shortage of truck drivers in our local labour market, the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin launched an AZ Truck Driver training program in partnerships with the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada. It is based upon a successful model in Atlantic Canada run by the Trucking HR Sector Council Atlantic.
In our first year, we saw 31 people start the Drive Forward program, and 28 complete training. And that road test? We are proud to announce that 25 participants have successfully achieved their AZ licence!
Drive Forward seeks to diversify the truck driving population while providing supports to participants to ensure their success. Drive Forward has removed financial barriers, been a support during mental health challenges, provided mentorship and community, and helped connect participants with their first job as a Driver.

Each year the annual EmployerOne Survey conducted by the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin allows businesses to share important information about hiring challenges and specific workforce needs.
